Hey! I’m Tori and I’m a third-year BFA UTeach Dance Major. A few weeks ago, I would’ve never anticipated the end of my semester to look like this. Who knew we what we thought was a goodbye for spring break would become a semester on zoom? While my norm was quickly shifted and much of the future is filled with uncertainty, I have been able to find peace and opportunity in this time.
Although I’ve been stuck at home, I sure have stayed busy. From taking dance classes online, trying new hobbies, and hanging with my family. I’ve always loved growing up in a big family, but let me tell you, right now, I sure am happy to have four siblings (Oh! And 3 dogs too!) From hanging by the pool (and getting too many sunburns), watching TV shows, and playing board games, we have been able to spend so much quality time together. It has been so nice to take a step back from our busy schedules to relax with each other.
Within all of this, I have spent more time outdoors than ever before. I have been able to take class outside, both academic and dance classes, and it has been so refreshing. Who knew my backyard porch railing could serve as such a great ballet barre!? Also, I have started running again and it has been so refreshing for me. First, it allows me to get out of the house for an extended period of time. And second, it allows me to stay active in ways that are different than I am used to. With spending time outside I have really been able to take in the beauty of nature. I haven’t missed a day of watching the clouds move through the sky or the sunset during quarantine.
As for dancing… It definitely was a big shift for me. From taking contemporary with the Juniors and Seniors in the huge Rec Center, to seeing each other in little squares in zoom was definitely an adjustment. While it sure is different dancing in my home, I am grateful I get to see and share a virtual space with my dance majors. Also, I have been taking classes through zoom, CLI studios, and Instagram live to keep moving. I have also spent a lot of time improving and choreographing! I have been teaching myself how to use iMovie and have been doing little projects to fill my time and hope to keep making some more.
Despite the circumstances, I have been able to find ways to be fulfilled and find joy amidst the chaos. To those who read this, I hope you are also able to stay positive, find the joy, and stay healthy! <3
